Connecting and Uploading via SFTP to ingest.ukserp.ac.uk

Any sftp enabled client can be used, this guide is just a walk-through using both WinSCP and FileZilla as examples. We usually recommend/request users use WinSCP as it’s easier for the Helpdesk team to support one single product.

WinSCP

  1. When launching WinSCP for the first time you should be prompted to create a “New Site”, if this doesn’t happen automatically you can initiate this prompt by navigating to Tabs > Sites > Site Manager…

  2. You should then have the following window in front of you…

  3. We care about the five fields highlighted in red, to configure access to ingest.ukserp.ac.uk they need to be populated thusly…

    1. File protocol: SFTP

    2. Host name: ingest.ukserp.ac.uk

    3. Port number: 22

    4. User name: [The value shared with you via LastPass (most likely)]

    5. Password: [The value shared with you via LastPass (most likely)]

  4. Then click Save which will add it to your Sites to make connecting easier in the future.

    1. It will prompt you for a name, feel free to leave it as the defaults.

    2. Once happy click OK and it’ll be added to the list as seen below

  5. From the same Site Manager screen, we can then click Login located in the bottom right corner.

  6. You may be prompted to trust the remote machine, this is normal and if you wish you can use the checkbox at the bottom to skip this prompt in the future however, this isn’t necessary. You can simply click ACCEPT each time you connect.

  7. If you chose not to save your password (which is recommended) you’ll then be prompted to put that in…

  8. You should then be brought back to the main management screen, you will have a panel on the left listing your local file system, and one on the right listing the remote file system. You can navigate through the folders by doubling clicking to enter into a folder, or double clicking the .. at the top to move back out of it.

  6. As seen above, the blue highlighted panel contains all your locally accessible files, and the green is the remote machine. You can then freely move files to the remove machine.

  7. Uploading is as simple as clicking and dragging the files from the panel on the left, into the relevant place on the panel in the right. You can navigate through both panels like a file explorer by clicking on folders which will display a list of all their contents in the second panel below. You may need to re-size panels in order to get a full view of all files.
